Excuse the language, but I’ve never had summer tires and after some twisties … shit they grip good. Even with wider 275s that clearly have no problem with 215hp. I really want to go autocross now.

And just because our cars are never actually parked by each other, heres some of the crew.

These tires have turned my BRZ into a completely new car!

They’re the only tires I will ever buy. My first experience was putting them on my BRZ, which transformed the car. I currently have them on my F30 328i and also my mom’s VW GLI.

275 section is way too much tire for just 215bhp

Says who? A main reason I got the car is so I would grip and quit drifting (read: crashing). Stock is 255 on a 9” rim that gets the car to 1.0g on a skidpad …. so whats wrong with moar grip?

more weight. take longer to get up to temp. more prone to hydroplaning (though tyre manufactures account for this with water channeling) higher cost. shorter life.

Did you try 255 Super Sports?

That said, it’s more to do with the weight of your car than straight out HP. you use the tyres while braking into the corners as much as accelerating. If you need more grip you need more grip.

I feel like the weight and the longer to temp difference would be minuscule at best. But I don’t know crap to be honest, because I’ve never had any summer tire before. Car had new all seasons when I got it and the old car spent its time sideways, so cheapest tire = best tire.

What I do know is I’ve been around the 255’s limits and got a deal on these. So maybe a better question is ‘why not?’

275 summer tires

Potential for grip problems with 215 HP and 230 lb. ft.

Seeing your other post in the comments, how were you drifting with 255s? Did you try 255 summer performance tires, first? You generally want to avoid increasing mass in your wheels when you can.

They’re my first summer tire, so I have no clue.

when autocrossing the weight and temp difference will be noticeable.

...but you’re not autocrossing all the time, so as long as you’re happy then you’ve got nothing to worry about.

275 is still crazy wide for 215hp. It should stick like the proverbial excrement to the proverbial blanket.

Drifted my old car and I can’t remember tire sizes on it.

Kinja'd!!!

But nope first performance tire I’ve owned, I’ll elaborate more because fuck it I guess.

Car had new all seasons, wore through this fall, got some extreme all season fronts (235 instead of 225) and some blizzaks for the rear. Was going to buy some rear lower quality summer tires for like $415 from discount tire or $395 from tire rack plus shipping. But was able to get these 275s PSS’ for $450. Impulse brain said “hell thats close enough and these are better.”

The only thing Crossfire’s are good at (besides looks imo) is grip …. so I’m just trying to get more of it.

My view on tires/wheel sizes.

Kinja'd!!!

*also I got 2 for $450, not their $670 retail.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Milky

Brand and model of tire?

I mean, if you want a decently grippy summer tire that won’t break the bank, the Continental Extreme Contact DW are nice. Not super cheap, but not anywhere close to $1200 for a full set, either. The less expensive Nitto NT555 aren’t bad, either, but they are directional.

But yeah, I don’t think you made a bad choice given the conditions, just that it is a bit overkill. The LT4 I have has an OEM size of 285 in the rear, the same width that the C7 features, despite being down 130 HP and 120 lb. ft. to the newer car. The ZR-1 has 315 in the rear, and is still down by 85 HP and 85 lb. ft. One of the differentiators is overall diameter. I’ve got 17-inch wheels on my cars, which means a smaller contact patch on 285s versus a 20 inch wheel with the same width of tire (as on the C7).

TL;DR: you’ve got some super meaty tires.

I was going to find wheels/tires for some combo with PSSes but they made me illegal for most street classes. I ended up settling on some BFGoodrich rubber that gets used on the Octane Academy cars. I found out why - they grip almost as well in the wet as they do in the dry. So hopefully it rains a lot this summer and I can capitalize on that factor lol. But I do miss my 200TW summers. So. Much. Grip.

Ignore them. Your handling has changed since you’re on 275s instead of 255s but it isn’t likely to ruin you or anything. Not like going from 255 to 355 would with nothing else modified. Just keep an eye on things in the rain and cold.

Says me. That chassis was made to handle more power where 275s make sense. With that size tire you’re wasting even more acceleration because of the increased contact, not even mentioning the other rolling resistance effects Rikerbeard has expounded upon

Hmm my only concern with tires that big in back is how are the fronts and what are they? Too much rear grip will upset the balance and without the power to spin them to rotate you could have added some understeer

Cant remember of the top of my head but some 235 extreme all seasons. But I wouldn’t say “added” understeer, I also have more front grip than before just not near as much as the rear.

Obviously I’ll find out when I go autocross where the understeer is, but after a twisty road session all I could feel was grip . Thats really all I wanted.

Actually I meant 140. 140TW is stock on the FiST and the PSS tires don’t come in a 16 or 17” 215 or 205 width. At least, none I could find. Any wider than 215 and it’s illegal for the street class since 205 is stock.

Side note - the 140TW tires lasted about 12k miles.

They were the bare minimum treadwear to be eligible for street classes in SCCA events. That’s why. You could literally go to a dealership, get a FiST, then go to an event that same day and clean house in GS. But now you need 200TW minimum so you need to buy new tires.
